How do I stop weeds with organic products?
I am wondering the best method to stop weeds while staying organic. I don’t want to use any chemicals or pesticides. Thanks.

I would put out some corn gluten meal as soon as you can. It is a mild fertilizer that works as a great pre-emergent. There are also organic spot-spray products that you can buy.

LikeDislikeI have had lengthy discussions with a lawn care company in NJ about this exact issue. I trust this company – I believe they are honest and established. What they have said is that, as of right now, it is not possible. Companies or products that promise organic weed control are lying. That’s not really the answer I wanted to hear, but I respected the fact that the owner was forthcoming with me. I am determined to find an answer myself – anyone else have any ideas? Matthew – do you have any spot-spray brand or product names you could share?

LikeDislikeAdam,
Nature’s Avenger Weed and Grass Killer and St Gabriel Laboratories Burnout Grass & Weed Killer are just a few. I can’t vouch for them as I haven’t used them, but they DO exist.
I can vouch for corn gluten meal. The stuff works, but you have to put it out BEFORE the weeds emerge for it to work. I have also heard that orange oil can be effective at limiting weeds, but be careful with the dosage.
The great thing about organic lawn care though is that weed control is a natural process. A healthy, natural lawn crowds out weeds by itself.

LikeDislikeI think you are forgetting about the old fashion organic method.
Pulling weeds by hand if a very effective way of controlling them. Most weed start on the edges of your lawn. If you have a nice edge around your lawn, the weeds will be really easy to pull out. If you have a small lawn, weeding by had is the quickest and most effective way of controlling weeds.

LikeDislikeI have a relatively healthy lawn. I use a company to treat it yearly and have been pretty satisfied. My problem is this viney type weed ( mint ) not sure of the technical term taking over in various spot in my yard along with violets that are hard to get rid of. Any suggestions on how to rid them.

LikeDislikeGary,
Vines are usually difficult to get rid of and often need to have all the root or bulb removed otherwise they keep coming back. Violets are tricky as well.
Violets spread through rhizomes, seeds, and self-pollinating c-flowers. If you are removing them by hand, you have to get the whole plant intact or it will come back. There are some products that work on violets.
You can try an herbicide called Triclopyr which comes in popular products such as Ortho Weed-B-Gon. If you have St. Augustine, Centipede, or Zoysia, then try products with Atrazine in them. Be sure to spot treat the violets in spring and fall when they are actively growing. The herbicide needs to stay in contact for at least 24 hours so don’t apply if rain is in the forecast. It may take some time and effort to totally get rid of them. They are extremely resilient plants. Good luck!
