Mulching vs. Bagging Grass
I’m wondering whether I should mulch or bag my grass? I’ve heard it’s better to mulch, but I’m looking for a good pros and con list for each method. Thanks!

Mulching:
Pro – returns nitrogen and organic material to the soil.
Con – can sometimes be unsightly if you have lots of cut grass blades clumping from not mowing frequently enough.
Bagging:
Pro – it gives your lawn a nice vacuum-looking cut free from any debris.
Con – you lose a lot of healthy nutrients/materials for the soil and grass.

LikeDislikeI would only recommend that you mulch in the early Spring. This is the time of year that your lawn clippings contain the most nitrogen. So this mulch can serve as organic fertilizer
Excessive mulching can lead to thatch build up and this can cause you to get fungus or insect infestations in your lawn. Also thatch build up can choke out your good grass and inhibit growth.
If you are mowing more then 1/3 of the blade then you should not mulch, cause this will also lead to thatch build up.

LikeDislikeIf there is enough microbial activity in the lawn, thatch build up will never be a problem. You can supplement microbial activity by occasionally applying compost topdressing.

LikeDislikeYou can also do it by aerating your lawn. The plugs contain microbials in them that will help break down the thatch. Also the oxygen penetrates the thatch and this helps too.
