What grass should i plant?
I live in Tyler and i just moved to a house that has 3 large trees that covers the majority of the back lawn.
After raking, i found that i have very little Augustine grass cover. I tried puting some cheap quick grass to cover the bare spots, but it died pretty quickly.
I also moved some Augustine sod from my front yard to the back next to my rose bushes so it would hopefully have a good spot to start spreading and get good moisture from my gutter.
But, my lawn is bare again and the Augustine just wont take hold and spread… so what are your recomendations of a good grass to plant that will last a while. Ive been looking at Bermuda grass and Argentine Bahiagrass.
Thanks!

You’re going to have to find out what turfgrass mix does best in your climate. Your area sounds like a difficult area to grow a lawn, especially with very sandy soil. I’d contact a local turfgrass expert – second choice, the Ag Extension Agent; could be the same office and find out what he/she recommends. It may take a little work, but it’s your best shot at having a sustainable lawn…

LikeDislikeIf you are speaking of Tyler,Texas and your back yard is mostly shaded all day
and is used as a play or high foot trafic area your best choice would be one
of the zoysia varieties. I have experienced the same situation in my back yard
thirty years ago when my children were small. It survived as a play area
and the family dog and in addition is low maintenance and drought tolerant.

LikeDislikeZoysia is a great variety, but I might be concerned about the level of shade you have in the backyard. Zoysia, even though it is low-maintenance, really likes sun.
